NEENAH – Appleton North took No. 1-ranked Neenah to the brink but the Rockets were able to hold on for a 65-54 win in the Fox Valley Association girls basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Neenah High School.
The game was tied 29-29 at halftime before Neenah, ranked No. 1 in the initial Wissports.net Division 1 state coaches poll that was released earlier this week, outscored the Lightning by 11 in the second half to earn the victory.
University of Connecticut recruit Allie Ziebell scored 37 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for the Rockets (4-0, 1-0 FVA), doing most of her damage at the free throw line as she made 20 of 23 foul shots. She also hit three 3-pointers.
Avery Werfal scored 20 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, and Shayna Williamson had 15 points and seven rebounds for Appleton North, which lost its third game in a row and is now 1-3 overall.
Appleton North’s next game is Thursday at Hortonville as part of a FVA girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
