Xavier tied for fourth, after first day of WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament, Appleton East’s Feller shoots 84

MADISON – Aliisa Helminen shot a 10-over par 82 to lead Xavier in the opening day of the 2023 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Course.

Helminen is in a tie for fourth place in the Division 2 field, five shots behind leader Payton Schmidt of Jefferson, who had a 77. Belle Kongshaug of Colfax/Elk Mound and Ava Pesha of Somerset are tied for second after firing 80s, and Helminen is tied with Lancaster’s Brianna Kirsch for fourth place.

Xavier is in fourth place in the team standings after shooting a 382. Prescott leads with 354, and Green Bay Notre Dame and Jefferson are tied for second with 365.

Elizabeth Schubbe had a 93, May Shimek shot a 99, Molly Martine had a 108 and Caroline VandenHeuval had a 109 to round out Xavier’s scoring.

In Division 1, Appleton East’s Jaelyn Feller is tied for 22nd after Day 1 as she shot an 84.

Payton Haugen of Brookfield East and defending state champion Izzy Stricker of Waunakee had 1-under par 71s and hold a one-shot lead over Kylie Walker of Westosha Central.

Westosha Central had a 324 and holds a one stroke lead over Waunakee and Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels in the D-1 team standings. Kaukauna and Bay Port are tied for sixth with 352.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.
