Xavier softball rallies to beat St. Mary Catholic in season-opener

NEENAH – The Xavier softball team scored five times in the sixth inning to rally from behind and defeated St. Mary Catholic 9-8 in a nonconference game Thursday at St. Mary Catholic High School.
The Hawks, playing their season-opener, trailed 7-3 after four innings before plating a run in the fifth and exploding for five in the sixth to pull ahead.
St. Mary Catholic (0-2) scored once in the bottom of the seventh before Xavier reliever Morgan Staszak coaxed a pop-up to end the game with the tying run on third base.
Joy Krull finished with three hits, and Elianna Riehl had two hits and two RBI for the Hawks.
Kaila Stammer and Staszak both added two hits as well for Xavier, which finished with 12 overall.
Xavier will host Little Chute for another nonconference game at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
