Xavier qualifies for state tournament with second-place finish at WIAA Division 2 girls golf sectional

HOBART – The Xavier girls golf team is heading back to the state tournament for the first time since 2019 after placing second at the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Thornberry Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.
Green Bay Notre Dame won the team title with a score of 346 and Xavier was second with a 361 to earn the two automatic berths at the 2023 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament, which will be held Oct. 9-10 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
Xavier will make its eighth state tournament appearance (2004-06, 2008-09, 2018-19).
Fox Valley Lutheran, which also competed at the sectional, finished fifth with a 417.
Notre Dame’s Ella Gelb was the individual sectional champion after firing an 80, four shots ahead of teammate Sophia Baek and Xavier’s Aliisa Helminen. Xavier’s Elizabeth Schubbe tied for fourth with a 90.
Marinette’s Regan Hermanson (sixth, 91), Seymour’s Morgan Lewis (seventh, 92) and Winneconne’s Callee Fink (11th, 93) earned the three individual state tournament berths from the sectional.
May Shimek added a 92, Caroline VandenHeuval had a 95, and Molly Martine had a 108 to round out Xavier’s scoring.
Elliot Kriewaldt and Lauren Movrich finished in a four-way tie for 15th with 98s to lead Fox Valley Lutheran.
