APPLETON – Xavier’s Lillie Fouts and Fox Valley Lutheran’s Emma Nilson each won a pair of titles and were among the 16 state meet qualifiers from the two schools at a WIAA Division 2 Track & Field Sectional at Appleton North High School on Thursday. Freedom was the host school.

The top four finishers in each event at the sectional automatically qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Track & Field Championships, which will be held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 31-June 1. Additional qualifiers – those who finish in the top eight statewide in all of the sectionals – will be announced on Friday.

Fouts won the girls 1,600 meters in 5:03.55 and the 3,200 in 11:04.78 for the Hawks, while Nilson posted FVL’s only two sectional titles as she won the girls discus (129 feet, 6 inches) and the shot put (41-7¼)

Also capturing a sectional championship for the Xavier girls was the 800-meter relay team of Grace Renz, Caroline Basehoar, Faith Hafner and Lauren Erickson, which won in 1:45.76.

Xavier’s Ben Olvey snagged a sectional title as well, winning the boys 110-meter hurdles in 14.99. He was the lone boys state qualifier for the Hawks.

Other state meet entries for Xavier were the 3,200 relay team of Annalise Minorik, Joy Krull, Hannah Linsmeyer and Fouts (second, 9:36.57); the 400 relay team of Hailey Hafner, Bernice Geurts, Bryce Hietpas and Yami Ornelas (second, 49.84); the 1,600 relay team of Gracie Hackl, Krull, Renz and Erickson (third, 4:04.19); Erickson in the 200 (26.31), Basehoar in the pole vault (second, 11-0), and Hackl in the 400 (fourth, 1:00.15).

Fox Valley Lutheran will have five entrants at state, with Jacoby Dobberstein capturing the Foxes’ lone sectional win as he placed first in the 300 hurdles in 40.28 seconds.

The Foxes’ 800-meter boys relay team of Jack Egan, Blessings Kapande, Caleb DuFresne and Kaleb Williams took fourth in 1:32.15 to also qualify for state.

In addition to Nilson’s two wins, the FVL girls will send its 400 relay team of Sophia Wunderlich, Annalise Patchett, Amethyst Holmes and Mya Burleton to state after it took third in 50.05 seconds. Claire Fischerl also netted a second-place finish in the 400 (59.87) and will join her teammates at the state meet.
