Xavier football pulls away from Winneconne, clinches Bay Conference championship

APPLETON – Xavier rushed for 317 yards and quarterback Reid Hietpas scored three touchdowns as the Hawks wrapped up the Bay Conference football title with a 45-19 win over second-place Winneconne on Friday at Xavier High School.

Jonah Gentry had a 72-yard touchdown run and Matthew Potter added a 9-yard scoring run to give the Hawks a quick 14-0 lead.

After Winneconne countered with a score, the Hawks ripped off 31-straight points as Hietpas scored on runs of 5, 1 and 22 yards, Isaiah Des Jardins had an 18-yard TD run, and A.J. Seidler kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Winneconne (5-3, 4-2 Bay Conference) scored twice in the fourth quarter to narrow the final margin.

Potter finished with 109 yards on the ground and Hietpas added 97 yards rushing and 64 yards passing on a pair of throws of Brendan Bruen.

Xavier (7-1, 6-0 Bay Conference) will wrap up its regular season at New London on Friday, Oct. 13. The WIAA postseason pairings and brackets will be announced on Saturday, Oct. 14, where the Hawks should be looking at a No. 1 or 2 seed and the possibility of multiple home games in the playoffs.
