Xavier football pounds New London to pick up first Bay Conference victory

NEW LONDON – The Xavier football team picked up its first Bay Conference win of the season with a dominating 63-20 win over New London on Friday night at New London High School.

The Hawks (3-2, 1-2 Bay Conference) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to take control and cruised the victory, piling up 479 total yards of offense, including 381 on the ground.

Quarterback Matthew Potter led the way with 107 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Eli Mares added a rushing score and a kick return for a touchdown, and Cole Hietpas scored on both of his carries in the first half as Xavier rolled.

Carter Appl had 15 tackles, and Simon VandenHeuvel had an interception and finished with 13 tackles to lead the Xavier defense.

Xavier is back home at Rocky Bleier Field next Friday, Sept. 27, to play undefeated Winneconne (5-0, 3-0 Bay Conference). Game time is 7 p.m.
