Xavier boys finish sixth at WIAA Division 2 cross country sectional

WAUPACA – The Xavier boys cross country team placed sixth at a WIAA Division 2 sectional on Friday at Waupaca High School.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams for both the boys and the girls qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Cross Country Meet at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Campbellsport (72 points) and Watertown Luther Prep (94) earned boys team qualifying spots for the state meet. Xavier was sixth with 169 points and no Hawks earned high enough finishes to move on to Wisconsin Rapids.

Owen Lencki of Waupaca won the boys 5-kilometer race in 16:11.8, 3.4 seconds ahead of Stevens Point Pacelli’s Luke Eiden. Berlin’s Thomas McCarthy, Wautoma’s Logan Erdman and Columbus’ Caleb Stadler grabbed the other three individual state meet berths.

Jordan Rosenbaum took 19th in 17:50.9 and Kyle Watry was 30th in 18:21.3 for Xavier’s top two finishers.

Watertown Luther Prep won the girls team title and Berlin was second to earn spots at next week’s state meet.

Oshkosh Lourdes’ Erin Moore was the girls race winner in 18:28.3, a whopping 1 ½ minutes in front of runner-up Olivia Gerhartz of Kewaskum. Those two, along with Dasha Averkamp of Lourdes, Sienna Timm of Waupaca and Hannah Yetter of Winneconne earned the five individual state berths.

The Xavier girls will race at a Division 1 sectional at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point on Saturday.
