DE PERE – Tyler Brightman scored 21 points and hauled down 13 rebounds to lead the Xavier boys basketball team to a big early-season Bay Conference win over West De Pere 72-65 on Tuesday night at West De Pere High School.

The two teams came into the game as two of the final three undefeated teams in the Bay, and the Hawks started strong, taking a 40-28 lead into halftime.

West De Pere made it close, but Xavier made enough free throws in the end to hold on for the win and keep its perfect season intact at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Bay Conference.

The Hawks went 19-for-28 at the free throw line, including 10 of 14 by Sam Pfefferle, who finished with 15 points. Hayden Quimby added 18 points and Luke Oelhafen 12 in the victory.

Bryce Borowicz had a team-high 21 points for West De Pere (3-2, 2-1 Bay Conference).

Xavier, ranked No. 6 in this week’s Wissports.net Division 3 state coaches poll, holds a one-half game lead over New London (2-0) in the conference standings. New London hosts Green Bay East on Thursday.

Xavier’s next game is Friday at home against Wautoma in a nonconference contest.
