SHAWANO – Shawano scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to slide past Xavier 7-3 in the Bay Conference baseball opener for both teams on Monday at Memorial Park.
Xavier led 3-2 after Reid Hietpas smacked a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, but couldn’t hold on as Shawano rallied with a big sixth inning.
With two outs, Shawano (2-0 overall) had five-straight hits, including a two-run triple by Pete Bruette, to overtake Xavier, which was also playing its season-opener.
Hietpas had two of Xavier’s three hits and drove in all three runs in the loss.
Xavier returns to action Monday, April 8, with a home conference game against Seymour at Don Hawkins Field at Appleton Legion Post 38. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
