Waupaca scores late, stuns Fox Valley Lutheran football

WAUPACA – Waupaca held Fox Valley Lutheran’s high-flying offense scoreless int eh second half, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and stunned the Foxes 18-17 in a Bay Conference football game Friday night at Waupaca High School.

FVL (3-1, 1-1 Bay Conference) jumped out to a 17-6 lead at halftime as Lucas Papendorf tossed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Davis Schumacher, Blessings Kapanda had a TD run and Reagan Doriot kicked a field 31-yard field goal.

The Foxes were shut down in the second half and Waupaca was able to grind out yards on the ground, 253 total on 47 carries.

Austin Adamczak threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Andre Hendrix on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut FVL’s lead to 17-12.

The Comets drove down for what proved to be the game-winning score as Adamczak hauled it in the end zone from the 1 with 1:24 to go to put Waupaca (1-3, 1-1 Bay Conference) up 18-17.

Fox Valley Lutheran hit a couple of pass plays to get into the red zone, but Waupaca picked off a pass in the final seconds to seal the win and send the Foxes to their first loss of 2024.

Papendorf finished 21-for-38 for 283 yards, with Nic Martin catching six balls for 107 yards and Schumacher finishing with eight catches for 96 yards.

Xzavier Pittman had 125 yards and Adamczak added 114 on the ground for Waupaca.

Fox Valley Lutheran will host Freedom on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.
