Top-seed Hortonville doubles up Appleton North in WIAA Division 1 girls basketball regional final

HORTONVILLE – The No. 1 seed Hortonville girls basketball team proved too much for Appleton North and ended the Lightning’s season with an 81-40 win in a WIAA Division 1 regional final Saturday night at Hortonville High School.
The Polar Bears (21-5) raced out to a 52-14 lead by halftime and finished off Appleton North, advancing to a Division 1 sectional semifinal against No. 4 seed Eau Claire Memorial (22-4) on Thursday. The game is scheduled to be played at Eau Claire North High School, but the WIAA reserves the right to change the venue.
Hortonville connected on 13 3-pointers, four from Rainey Welson, who finished with a team-high 24 points.
Sophie Busch had 10 points and Avery Werfal nine points for the Lightning, who were held to 27 percent shooting (14-for-51).
The No. 8 seed Appleton North finishes its season with a 13-13 record, including a regional semifinal win over Oshkosh West on Friday.
