Mosinee storms back from 16-point deficit to top Xavier boys basketball

MOSINEE – Mosinee overcame a 16-point first half deficit and defeated Xavier 72-65 in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday at Mosinee High School.

Xavier, ranked third in this week’s Wissports.net Division 3 state coaches poll, rolled out to a 32-16 lead, before Mosinee ended the first half on a 13-0 run, cutting the Hawks’ lead to three at the break.

Xavier went back up by eight before Mosinee chipped away and eventually went ahead with four minutes to go. The Indians (19-3) were able to make free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory and end the Hawks’ 10-game winning streak.

Sam Pfefferle had 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Tyler Brightman added 19 points and eight rebounds for Xavier, which falls to 19-2 this season. The Hawks went just 6-for-30 from 3-point range.

Keegan Jirschele had 21 a game-high 21 points and Landen Thomer scored 18 for Mosinee.

Xavier returns to Bay Conference action Friday at Green Bay East.
