Menasha holds off Appleton East football

APPLETON – Logan Liegl threw three touchdown passes for Menasha as the Bluejays edged Appleton East 21-19 in a nonconference football game to open the 2023 season Friday at Appleton East High School.
Kyreese White scored on touchdown runs of 31 and 32 yards in the first half for East, but the Patriots trailed 14-13 heading into halftime.
Menasha added a score in the third quarter when Ryan Johnson caught a 5-yard pass from Liegl, upping the Bluejays’ lead to eight.
Appleton East had a chance to tie the game early in the fourth quarter after an 84-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Weisbach to Anthony Burdett with 10 minutes to go, but East’s two-point attempt failed.
Neither team scored the rest of the way as Menasha was able to hold on for the victory.
Liegl finsihed with 295 yards passing for the Bluejays, as Parker Weinandt racked up 121 yards on three catches, including a 91-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
White finished with 98 yards on just six carries, and Bandon Moua added 74 yards on the ground for Appleton East.
Appleton East will play its final nonconference game at Appleton West next Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
