Manitowoc holds down Appleton Post 38 in Class AAA Legion Baseball Regional

APPLETON – Manitowoc Post 88 used a pair of three-run innings to down Appleton Post 38 7-1 in a winners’ bracket game at the Class AAA American Legion Baseball Regional on Thursday night at Don Hawkins Field at Post 38.
Manitowoc broke open a scoreless game with a three-run fourth inning and tacked on another in the fifth to make it 4-0.
Appleton scored its only run in the sixth when Alex Ramus singled, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout and scored on a balk, cutting Manitowoc’s lead to 4-1.
That would be it for Post 38 as Manitowoc tacked on three more in the seventh and Appleton was sent down in order in the bottom of the frame.
Appleton was held to four hits, two coming from leadoff hitter Nick Bergin.
Michael Gwiazdon took the loss for Appleton, giving up four runs over six innings while striking out nine.
Eyan Dessellier picked up the victory as he held Post 38 to just the one run through 6 1/3 innings and struck out 10.
Appleton Post 38 (9-12) will take on rival Appleton Double Days (13-3) in an elimination game at 3 p.m. Friday. Manitowoc will play Kaukauna in a winners’ bracket game at 5:30 p.m., with the winner of the first game taking on the loser of the second in another elimination game at 8 p.m.
