Late free throws lifts Marshfield past Appleton East boys basketball

APPLETON – Brooks Hinson made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to give the Marshfield boys basketball team a 52-51 win over Appleton East in a nonconference game on Tuesday at East High School.

The game was the season-opener for both teams.

Marshfield led 24-20 at halftime before Appleton East came back and took a late lead. Hinson calmly drained two free throws with 14 seconds to go to put the Tigers on top and they held off East in the final seconds to earn the victory.

Cade Prestigiacomo had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Brayden Nieman added 12 points and seven rebounds for Appleton East. The Patriots finished 8-for-26 from 3-point range and missed six of their 11 free throw attempts.

Hinson finished with 15 points, Ethan Knecht added 13, and Chris Pohl scored 11 to lead the way for Marshfield, which made nine 3-pointers in the win, including three by Pohl and two by Knecht.

Appleton East opens its Fox Valley Association schedule at Fond du Lac on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
