Last-second goal lifts Fond du Lac past Appleton United boys hockey

APPLETON – Fond du Lac scored in the final seconds to edge Appleton United 2-1 in a Badgerland Conference boys hockey game Tuesday night at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
After Henry Heathman tied the game at 1-1 with a goal for Appleton with 6:01 to go in the second period, the game remained deadlocked and seemingly heading to overtime until Fond du Lac’s Blake Spies scored with six seconds to go to give the Cardinals the victory.
Fond du Lac (2-2, 1-0 Badgerland) outshot Appleton (1-2, 1-1 Badgerland) 61-16, with United goalie Brandon Tobak knocking back 59 saves in the loss.
Appleton will be back at home Thursday for a nonconference game against Manitowoc United at 7:30 p.m. at the Appleton Family Ice Center.
