Kimberly hands Appleton East girls basketball first loss of the season

APPLETON – Kimberly opened up a double-digit lead by halftime and handed Appleton East its first loss of the season with a 65-48 victory in the Fox Valley Association girls basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday night at East High School.

Kimberly, ranked No. 5 in the first Wissports.net Division 1 state coaches poll, led 40-29 by halftime and was able to use a strong defensive performance to hold off an East rally in the second half.

Appleton East, ranked No. 9 in the initial state poll, had seven 3-pointers in the loss. Lilly Muelmans scored 12 points and Torie Neubauer added 11 for the Patriots (4-1 overall).

Katelyn McGinnis made three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points for Kimberly. Haylie Dulas chipped in 12 for the Papermakers (2-0 overall).

Both teams return to action Friday with FVA contests. Kimberly will play at No. 1-ranked Neenah, while Appleton East will be at home again vs. Fond du Lac.
