APPLETON – The Kaukauna and Appleton West baseball teams were locked up in a pitchers’ duel and the Ghosts were able to scratch out a run to win 1-0 in a Fox Valley Association game Thursday at the Nienhaus Sports Complex.
Kaukauna’s Bron Schaefer struck out 14, walked two and allowed just one hit in the complete-game shutout.
Appleton West’s Michael Gwiazdon nearly matched him, also giving up just one hit while walking two, but a fourth-inning unearned run handed him the loss.
Isaac Maas reached on an error to lead off the fourth for Kaukauna (10-6, 8-4 FVA), went to third on a single by Kyle Kress – the Ghosts’ lone hit – and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Boylan.
Schaefer sent down the next 12 Terrors in a row over the final four innings to finish off the victory.
A single by Loren Georger with two outs in the third inning was Appleton West’s lone hit as the Terrors drop to 5-10 overall and 5-6 in the FVA.
Appleton West will travel to Neenah for another FVA game Friday at 4:30 p.m.
