Fox Valley Lutheran football earns season-opening win at Winneconne

WINNECONNE – Fox Valley Lutheran quarterback Liam Heiges threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns, two to David Schumacher, and the Foxes completed a come-from-behind 35-26 victory over Winneconne in its 2023 season opener Friday night at Winneconne High School.

Fox Valley Lutheran surged to a 21-19 lead by halftime as Heiges hit Schumacher with a 39-yard touchdown pass, connected with Trenton Heyn for a 6-yard score, and completed a 60-yard scoring strike to Nicholas Martin.

After Winneconne pulled ahead with a touchdown in the third quarter, Jack Egan put the Foxes back on top with a 1-yard score. Heiges hit Schumacher for a 35-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to provide an insurance scored as FVL shutout out the Wolves in the final period.

Heiges finished 13-for-25 for 256 yards and the four scores, and added 89 yards on the ground. Egan chipped in 54 yards rushing as the Foxes racked up 403 yards of total offense.

Fox Valley Lutheran will play its final nonconference game at Xavier next Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
