Fox Valley Lutheran earns three sectional berths, Xavier two at WIAA Division 2 Two Rivers wrestling regional

TWO RIVERS – Fox Valley Lutheran advanced three wrestlers and Xavier two on to next week’s sectional after competing at a WIAA Division 2 wrestling regional on Saturday at Two Rivers High School.

The top four finishers in each weight class at the regional on Saturday advance to next week’s WIAA Division 2 individual sectional at Oconto Falls on Saturday, Feb. 17. The top three finishers in each weight class at the sectional will qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 22-24.

Fox Valley Lutheran had a pair of third-place finishers and another take fourth to move on to sectionals. Austin Kufner (31-5) won the 150-pound third-place match over Xavier’s John Faulkner (29-9), 5-0, and Caleb DuFresne (5-2) placed third at 165 pounds, winning the third-place match over Weston Schmidt of Brillion 10-7. Peyton Lemberger (19-9) took fourth at 215 pounds as he won his fifth-place match and a fourth-place wrestleback due to a medical forfeit.

In addition to Faulker, Xavier’s Cristian Rodriguez Salgado is moving on the sectionals. He placed fourth at 106 pounds and is now 26-12 this season.

Luxemburg-Casco won the team title with 298 points, well ahead of second-place Winneconne (165), and both advance to a WIAA Division 2 team sectional at Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday. Luxemburg-Casco will take on Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Freedom will face Winneconne in the semifinals, with the winners meeting up for a chance to advance to the 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on March 1-2 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison.
