Fox Cities Stars girls hockey drops two overtime games over weekend

NEENAH – The Fox Cites Stars girls hockey lost a pair of nonconference home games, both in overtime, at the Tri-County Ice Arena over the weekend.

The Stars fell 2-1 to St. Croix Valley on Friday night and 4-3 to Hayward on Saturday.

In Friday’s game, St. Croix Valley’s Morgan Kivel and Fox Cities’ Olivia Merritt scored in the second period and that 1-1 tie held through the end of regulation.

Kivel needed just 44 seconds in the extra period to find the back of the net again to knock in the game-winner for the Fusion (13-8).

Addison Grasse had 28 saves in goal for the Stars.

Fox Cities stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to force overtime against Hayward on Saturday at home, only to fall short in the second OT period.

Margaret Thomas scored twice and Ella Merritt had a goal for the Stars in the third-period comeback, but after a scoreless first overtime, Reese Sheehan knocked in her second goal of the game just less than four minutes in to give the Hurricanes the victory.

The Stars (11-10) will play the Northland Pines Co-op team at Rhinelander on Monday.
