Four Appleton North runners, one from Appleton West qualify for state at WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional

STEVENS POINT – Four Appleton North runners and another from Appleton West qualified for next week’s state meet after high finishes at the WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.
The top two teams and top five runners not on the qualifying teams in both the boys and girls competitions earn berths in the 2023 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Stevens Point had five of the top six finishes, and all seven of its runners ended up in the top 10, as it ran away with the boys team title with 17 points. Neenah also qualified for state as a team by taking second, well ahead of third-place Kimberly.
Neenah won the girls title with 46 points and Kaukauna took second with 62 to also qualify as teams for the state championships.
The Appleton North girls placed fourth and the boys were fifth, and two runners in each race earned state berths.
Riley Szymik placed ninth in 16:49 and Caleb Hardy was 12th in 17:01 for the North boys, and Ava Helmbrecht finished third in 19:17 and Sophia Scherwinski was ninth in 19:34 in the girls 5-kilometer race to qualify for the state meet for the Lightning.
Appleton West’s Tyce Scheetz also earned a state meet berth as he placed 13th in the boys race in 17:02.
Appleton East’s top runners were Louie Mandich (54th, 19:00) and Rosemarie Butler (25th, 20:41).
Appleton West’s top girls finisher was Roseanna Dane, who placed 31st in 20:49.
