KIMBERLY – The Appleton East baseball team’s run through the WIAA playoffs came to an end Tuesday with an 8-0 loss to No. 1 seed De Pere in a sectional semifinal at Sunset Park.
Milo Upton smacked a three-run home run to cap a five-run first inning for the Redbirds and that was more than enough.
No. 12 seed Appleton East was held to two hits and ends its season with a 10-16 record.
De Pere tacked on three more runs in the second inning, and Axel Donaldson and Devin Weber combined on the shutout.
Alex Thompson and Rylan Winkler each had hits for the Patriots.
De Pere (24-3) went on to defeat Bay Port 9-3 in the sectional final to earn a spot in next week’s state tournament at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton. It is the Redbirds’ first state berth since 2006.
