APPLETON – Appleton Post 38 pitchers held De Pere to two hits, but five walks and three errors proved pivotal as it dropped a 5-4 decision in an American Legion baseball game Thursday night at Don Hawkins Field.
De Pere pulled out to a 5-0 lead after scoring twice in the top of the fifth before Post 38 made a run at it.
Appleton scored four times in the bottom of the fifth as Gus Rieckman had an RBI single, Logan Hudson doubled home two and later scored on a single by Alex Ramus, cutting De Pere’s lead to 5-4.
An out on the bases helped De Pere escape any further damage.
De Pere pitcher Sam Vanden Langenberg struck out the side in the sixth and left two runners stranded in the seventh to finish off the win.
Ramus, Isaac Schultz and Ethan Wick each had two hits for Post 38 (8-10), which had nine in all.
Appleton will close out its regular-season schedule Friday at home against the Green Bay Hornets at 8 p.m.
