Appleton West grabs team berth, North’s Huenink and East’s Geerts earn individual spots into sectionals at WIAA Division 1 Boys Golf Regional

KAUKAUNA – Appleton West finished third in the team standings, and Appleton North sophomore Jon Heunink and Appleton East senior Jadon Geerts locked down individual sectional berths at the WIAA Division 1 Boys Golf Regional on Wednesday at Fox Valley Golf Club.

Kimbelry had four of the top 11 finishers and won the team title with a score of 310, seven shots in front of West De Pere. Appleton West took third with a 323 and Hortonville defeated Kaukauna in a playoff to earn the fourth team spot at next week’s sectional.

The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams qualify for the D-1 sectional on Tuesday at Thornberry Creek Golf Club in Green Bay. The top two teams and top three individuals not on the qualifying teams will move on to the 2024 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at the Meadows at Blackwolf Run in Kohler on June 3-4.

West De Pere’s Mason Haupt ran away with the individual regional title, shooting a 4-under par 69. Kimberly’s Aiden Cudney was a distant second with a 76, one shot better than teammate Riley Schmidt and Huenink, who led Appleton North with a 77.

Huenink, the Fox Valley Association individual champion, birdied holes No. 15 and 18 to finish at even par on the back nine to secure his spot at sectionals.

In addition to Geerts, who shot a 79, Kaukauna teammates Noah Schneider (79) and Jonah Roehig (83) earned the final two individual sectional berths.

Appleton West’s top four scoring golfers all finished in the top 17 to get the Terrors into sectionals. Collin Evers had a 79 to finish in six-way tie for sixth, Lucas Downs had an 80, Prestynn Evers shot 81 and Austin Arizola fired and 83 to pace West.

Fox Valley Lutheran’s Kaden Kusserow shot an 85 and Ethan Ruppel had an 86, and East’s Kenny Kapheim also shot an 86 to just miss out on a possible playoff for the last individual spot.
