APPLETON – Appleton West’s Loren Georger fired a gem and the No. 13 seed Terrors pulled off a big upset, downing crosstown-rival and No. 4 seed Appleton North 3-0 in a WIAA Division 1 baseball regional semifinal Tuesday at North High School.
West scored twice in the first inning and that was plenty for Georger, who allowed just one hit – a two-out double to William Hoerner in the first inning – as he cruised to the shutout win.
Georger struck out 10 and retired the final 15 batters in order to finish off the win for the Terrors.
Appleton West (7-16) will play a regional final on Thursday against the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 12 seed Appleton East and No. 5 seed Kaukauna.
Georger and Mason Peterson each had RBI singles in the first inning to give Appleton West a quick 2-0 lead.
Georger and Appleton North pitcher Ethan Wick matched zeroes after that until the Terrors tacked on a run in the seventh when Peterson led off with a single and scored on a triple by Dexter Gerard.
Georger finished off the shutout with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.
Wick finished with 10 strikeouts in six innings or work for the Lightning (14-8).
