Appleton Post 38 Legion baseball notches two wins at Carol Stream tournament

CAROL STREAM, Ill. – The Appleton Post 38 American Legion baseball team rebounded from a pair of losses Friday to sweep two games on Saturday at the Carol Stream Legion Tournament.

Appleton defeated Palos Heights (Ill.) 8-6 and FattFro 18U of Lake Barrington, Ill., 12-6, to even its record at 2-2 in the three-day tournament.

In the win over Palos Heights, Appleton broke open a tie game with a run in the sixth inning and tacked on two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Reed Flick and an error.

Alex Brokaw had three hits, Gregory Brown knocked in two runs and Nick Bergin added two hits for Appleton.

Michael Gwiazdon earned the win, allowing five runs in five innings, and Alex Ramus tossed two shutout innings to earn the save for Post 38.

Appleton scored nine runs over the first three innings and cruised to the victory over FattFro.

Bergin continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Brandon Schopf and Ramus each drove in three runs, and Ethan Wick added two RBI in the victory for Appleton.

Gus Rieckman picked up the pitching win, throwing 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Appleton (3-3) will play again Sunday as the tournament concludes. A game time and opponent were not announced.
