MADISON – Appleton North senior Jake Stoffel is a two-time state champion after he used a second-period surge to defeat Benjamin Ott of Glendale Nicolet 6-2 in the Division 1 175-pound final at the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.
Following a scoreless first period, Stoffel started the second period in the down position and earned a quick escape to take a 1-0 lead.
Stoffel eventually took down Ott and grabbed a three-point nearfall to take a 6-0 lead and that would be more than enough.
Ott started down in the third period and gained an escape and Stoffel, a University of Missouri recruit, was able to finish off an undefeated season (42-0) and capture his second state title in a row after winning at 152 pounds in 2023.
North’s other state finalist, senior Brock Arndt, could not get any offense going in his 285-pound championship match against West Bend West’s Cole Mirasola and lost 7-3 to finish as a runner-up for the second year in a row.
Mirasola (51-1) captured his third-straight state title as he used a pair of takedowns in the opening period to open up a 4-2 lead.
Mirasola went up 7-2 with an escape and takedown in the second period and Arndt, last year’s runner-up at 220 pounds, couldn’t get anything going out of the neutral position in the third. Arndt finishes the year with a 30-2 record.
