Appleton North’s No. 1 doubles team of Gaskill-Janda qualify for state at WIAA Division 1 Notre Dame sectional; FVL’s Bowater earns extra spot

GREEN BAY – Appleton North No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Gaskil and Sabrina Janda qualified for next week’s state tournament by reaching the semifinals at a WIAA Division 1 girls tennis sectional Wednesday at Western Racquet Club.

The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the top finisher at No. 2 singles and doubles at each of the eight Division 1 sectionals qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament, which will be held Oct. 17-19 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Green Bay Notre Dame won the team title with 47 points and moves on to the 2024 WIAA State Team Tennis Tournament, which will also be at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, on Oct. 25-26.

Appleton North’s Gaskill and Janda, both juniors, came from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-3, over Elly Kirsta and Lily Brown of Ashwaubenon in the quarterfinals at No. 1 doubles to advance to the state tournament. The North duo lost both their semifinal and third-place matches.

Fox Valley Lutheran’s two sectional qualifiers were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

FVL junior Linda Bowater lost her No. 1 singles quarterfinal match to Karlie Schock of Bay Port 6-0, 6-0, and the Foxes’ No. 1 doubles team of Johanna Mears and Avery Steffes lost its opening match to Khali Stephens and Alexia Stephens of Bay Port 6-0, 6-1.

Bowater (14-3) was added as an extra qualifier for the state tournament.

Appleton North’s No. 3 doubles team of Clara Douglas and Addie Schneider, both seniors, lost their first match.
