Appleton North’s Huenink wins playoff to take individual title at FVA Boys Golf Championships

APPLETON – Appleton North sophomore Jon Huenink said he was feeling confident in his swing and knew he could take the chance and go for the par-5 11th hole in two, even with the Fox Valley Association title on the line.
Huenink laced a 7-iron from 170 yards out on to the fringe of the green, two-putted for birdie, and captured the title at the 2024 Fox Valley Association Boys Golf Championships on Friday at Chaska Golf Course.
Huenink and Fond du Lac’s Carson Hull tied for first place after shooting 3-over par 75s, one shot better than four others.
After both scoring a par on the 10th hole, the first of the sudden-death playoff, Huenink stood in the 11th fairway and watched Hull miss the green. He decided to go for it.
“After Carson didn’t hit that good of a second shot, I knew I could go hunting only having 170 out,” Huenink said. “My swing the whole day was feeling good and I had a lot of confidence into that shot.
“Just staying positive and fighting for it kept me in it to even get in the playoff.”
Combined with the regular-season dual meet scores, Huenink won the overall FVA individual title by a comfortable seven points over Fond du Lac’s Will Mauthe, who was among those tying for third on Friday with a 76.
Fond du Lac won the team title on Friday with a sizzling 304. In addition to Hull and Mauthe, Cole Thorin also shot 76 and Jacob Keys had a 77 to place all four of the Cardinals’ scoring golfers in the top seven.
Kimberly finished second in the tournament with a 314, but won the overall title, with Fond du Lac second. Appleton East placed third in the tournament with a 319, Appleton North tied for fifth with a 330 and Appleton West took seventh with a 338.
Owen Lutes was also among those tied for third with a 76 to lead Appleton East, which tied Hortonville for third in the final overall standings. Kenny Kapheim added a 77 for the Patriots.
Collin Evers tied for seventh with Kapheim, Keys and two others with a 77 to lead Appleton West. The Terrors placed fifth in the final overall standings.
Drew Rudolf shot 78 to take 12th place for Appleton North.
Appleton North, Appleton East and Appleton West will compete at a WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional at Fox Valley Golf Club in Kaukauna on Wednesday. The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams will move on to a D-1 sectional at Thornberry Creek Golf Club in Green Bay on May 28.
