Appleton North, Xavier girls volleyball teams tie for third at Mequon Homestead Joust

MEQUON – The Appleton North and Xavier girls volleyball teams tied for third place at the 24-team Mequon Homestead Joust on Friday and Saturday.

North finished 5-1, defeating Brookfield Central 25-16, 25-17; Milwaukee St. Thomas More 25-15, 25-10; and Slinger 25-22, 25-19, in pool play on Friday. In bracket play Saturday, the Lightning defeated Franklin 25-20, 23-25, 15-10, and Howards Grove 25-14, 25-17, before falling in the Gold Bracket semifinals to Oconomowoc 25-16, 27-25.

Teegan Charapata had 33 kills, 33 digs and four service aces, Emerson Van Lannen had 121 assists, 20 kills, 31 digs and six aces, and Maggie Hahnke had 52 digs to lead Appleton North in its six matches.

Lydia Koshuta had 29 digs, 10 assists and six aces, Kayden Lamon had 12 kills, and Taylee Jones had 11 kills and seven blocks as well for the Lightning.

“It was great to see our girls compete against the top teams in the state and step up to the challenge,” Appleton North coach Steve Scheuerell said. “Our team has shown so much growth the last two weeks and I am excited for our conference schedule to start.”

Xavier also reached the semifinals of its bracket before suffering its only loss of the tournament. The defending WIAA Division 2 state champions defeated Waukesha West 25-19, 25-15, and Hartland Arrowhead 25-18, 25-17, on Saturday before falling to Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels in the semifinals 25-22, 20-25, 15-10.

In the three matches for the Hawks on Saturday, Belle Shea had 28 digs and four aces, Annika Kowalski had 22 kills and 12 digs, and Mariah Potter had 49 assists, seven kills and four aces.

Halle Vande Hey added 19 kills, and Olivia Neumann had 10 blocks and nine kills for Xavier.

Xavier plays a nonconference match at Fox Valley Lutheran on Wednesday, and Appleton North’s next match is its Fox Valley Association opener at Hortonville on Thursday.
