HORTONVILLE – No. 11 seed Appleton North scored three times in the top of the 10th inning to win a wild WIAA Division 1 softball regional semifinal over Hortonville 6-4 on Tuesday at Otto Miller Park.
The Lightning fought back from a 2-1 deficit, scoring twice in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Callie Weber and a sacrifice fly by Claire Therkildsen.
Hortonville was able to tie it up in its final at-bat on an RBI single by Olivia Peters, and the 3-3 score held until the 10th when Appleton North got something going.
Alyssa Wald and Lila Griffith had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and Wald scored on a groundout by Tatum Beggs. After a fly out, Raegen Schwarz smacked a two-run single to give the Lightning a 6-3 lead.
Hortonville scored once in the bottom of the frame, but North pitcher Sophia Wald was able to finish off the win, and a 10-inning complete-game victory for Appleton North.
Schwarz finished with three hits, including a home run, and drove in three to pace the Lightning offense.
North (7-17) moves on to a D-1 regional final at No. 3 seed Green Bay Preble (23-4) on Thursday.
