GREEN BAY – The Appleton North softball team was held to two hits and dropped its season-opener to West De Pere 3-1 in a nonconference game at King Field at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Thursday.
After West De Pere scored a run in the top of the first inning, Appleton North’s Claire Therkildsen smacked a home run to tie the game.
The Phantoms (2-1) responded with two runs in the top of the second inning and that would be it as they held on for the victory.
Charlotte Radtke threw four shutout innings in relief with 11 strikeouts for the Lightning.
Appleton North will play another nonconference game Friday at Bay Port starting at 4:30 p.m.
