Appleton North grabs eight state meet berths, Appleton West/Kimberly three at WIAA Division 1 girls swimming & diving sectional

NEENAH – Appleton North earned eight state meet berths and Appleton West/Kimberly had three after competition at a WIAA Division 1 girls swimming & diving sectional on Saturday at Neenah Middle School.

Winners of each event and the next-best 18 finishers in each event statewide qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Girls Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Waukesha South High School.

All three of Appleton North’s relay teams qualified for state, including two sectional champions. The Lightning’s 200-yard medley relay team of freshmen Maddie Loken, Elise Brazzale and Aeryn Weber, along with senior Ana Flanagan, won in 1:48.18; Afton Scoresby, Loken, Sophia Golub and Flanagan won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.97; and the 400 freestyle relay team of Brazzale, Golub, Weber and Scoresby placed third in 3:38.61 to qualify for state.

Flanagan won the 100 breastroke in 1:03.75 and will be joined at state by Loken, who was third in the event in 1:06.11. Flanagan also reached state in a fourth event as she placed second in the 50 freestyle in 23.83.

Also moving on in individual events for the Lightning were Brazzale in the 100 butterfly as she placed second in 58.27 seconds and Scoresby in the 100 freestyle as she finished second in 53.02.

Appleton West/Kimberly’s Callee DeBruin was the lone swimmer to make it for the co-op team as she took third in the 500 freestyle in 5:24.53.

Ava Strassburg won the diving competition with 459.70 points and teammate Luiciana Blair placed third with 434.70 as both will compete at the state meet for Appleton West/Kimberly.

Appleton East/Hortonville/Kaukauna did not have any state qualifiers.
