Appleton North girls win team title at SPASH Panther Cross Country Invitational

STEVENS POINT – Eva Busch won the girls race and Appleton North had two others finish in the top five to take first place at the SPASH Panther Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.
Busch won in 19:29.7, three seconds ahead of teammate Sophia Scherwinski. Ava Helmbrecht took fifth in 20:15.1 to help the Lightning finish with 44 points, less than half of second-place Sun Prairie West. Appleton East placed ninth among the 15 complete teams with 200 points.
Audry Dehlinger took 15th (21:24) and Amber Ziemer was 21st (21:43) in the strong performance from the Lightning.
Rosemarie Butler placed 20th in 21:40.9 and Evie Eidemiller was 25th in 21:49.5 to lead Appleton East.
On the boys side, Stevens Point had three of the top four finishers and took the team title with 25 points. Appleton North was third with 149 and Appleton East ninth with 214.
Ethan Olds of Stevens Point won the boys race in 16:20.0. North’s top finisher was Spencer Gramban, who placed 21st in 17:56.1, while East’s top runner was Louie Mandich, who finished 26th in 18:16.4.
Appleton North’s next meet is Thursday at the Bay Port Invitational at Meadowbrook Park. East is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Smiley Invitational at Wausau East High School.
