Appleton North girls take team title at Bay Port Cross Country Invitational

HOWARD – Appleton North had five top-seven finishes, including winner Sophia Scherwinski, as the Lightning won the team title at the Bay Port Mike Jameson Cross Country Invitational on Thursday at Meadowbrook Park.
Scherwinski won the girls race in 19:37.3, 17 seconds ahead of teammate Eva Busch. Audry Dehlinger finished fifth, Amber Ziemer sixth and Sophie Busch seventh as well for the Lightning, who ended up with 21 points. West De Pere was a distant second with 62 points.
Sheboygan North won the boys team title with 46 points, with Bay Port second with 71 and Appleton North third with 78.
Ian Willemsen of Sheboygan North won the boys 5-kilometer race in 17:21.1.
Appleton North had all five of its top runners finish between 13th and 19th place, led by Jacob McGinn, who was 13th in 18:27.2.
Appleton North will be off until Sept. 28 when it travels to Janesville for the Midwest Invitational at Blackhawk Golf Course.
