Appleton North girls finish second, boys fourth at Stevens Point Cross Country Invite

STEVENS POINT – Ava Helmbrecht and Sophia Scherwinski both ended up in the top 10 to lead the Appleton North girls to a runner-up finish at the Stevens Point Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

Lucy Dolan of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption won the girls race in 19:00.5, 31 seconds in front of Rosholt’s Sophia Bablitch. Helmbrecht ended up fourth in 19:56.4 and Scherwinski was eighth in 20:25.0 to lead the Lightning.

Stevens Point won the girls team title with 59 points, with North a close second with 73. The Lightning’s top-five runners finished in the top 22.

Stevens Point also won the boys team title as it had five runners finish in the top 10.

Appleton North ended up fourth, just one point out of third in the boys standings. Riley Szymik took 11th in 16:56.9 and Caleb Hardy was 14th in 17:00.8 for North.

Appleton North will compete at the Bay Port Invitational on Thursday at Meadowbrook Park in Green Bay.
