Appleton North girls basketball dominates second half, pulls out WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal win over Oshkosh West

APPLETON – The Appleton North girls basketball team clamped down defensively in the second half, limiting Oshkosh West to 10 points, and finished off a 39-30 victory in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Friday night at North High School.

The Lightning trailed 20-18 at halftime before doubling up Oshkosh West in the second half with a dominating defensive performance.

The No. 8 seed Appleton North (13-12) moves on to a regional final at No. 1 seed Hortonville (20-5) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Hortonville pounded Chippewa Falls 86-16 on Friday night.

Avery Werfal scored 16 points, and Tay Maass had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win for the Lightning.

Laina Hammen led Oshkosh West (14-11) with 10 points.
