Appleton North girls basketball clamps down on Appleton West to pick up first FVA win of the season

APPLETON – The Appleton North girls basketball team clamped down on Appleton West, holding the Terrors to just six made baskets from the field, and picked up its first Fox Valley Association win of the season.

Shayna Williamson had 17 points and Ilah Scherwinski chipped in 15 as the Lightning dominated for a 68-19 win over their crosstown rivals. Following a four-game losing streak, North has now won two in a row and is 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the FVA.

North scored the game’s first eight points, which included one of three 3-pointers in the game from Williamson, and after West scored on a steal and layup by Jurnie Womack, the Lightning ripped off 11 more in a row to open up a commanding 19-2 lead.

Appleton North closed the first half with a 14-3 run that saw Williamson score five and Scherwinski the final four as it took a 38-11 lead into the break.

Appleton West (2-4, 0-3 FVA) was only able to make two shots from the floor in the second half and the Lightning used another big run, this time 17-0, to push the lead to 63-17. The final 10 minutes of the game were a running clock scenario.

Avery Werfal added 12 points and seven rebounds for Appleton North, which saw nine players hit the scoring column.

Womack led the Terrors with eight points.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday with FVA matchups as Appleton West hosts Kimberly and Appleton North travels to Oshkosh West. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
