Appleton North, Fox Valley Lutheran both earn two sectional berths at WIAA Division 1 girls tennis subsectional

APPLETON – Appleton North and Fox Valley Lutheran each earned two sectional berths after competition at a WIAA Division 1 girls tennis subsectional on Monday at the Fox Cities Racquet Club.
Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and players reaching the finals in all other flights, qualify for the Division 1 sectional at the Western Racquet Club in Green Bay on Wednesday.
Appleton North’s No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Gaskill and Sabrina Janda won 6-1, 6-0, over Kaukauna’s Emily Bolstad and Linnea Wolfe, in a quarterfinal match to advance.
No. 3 doubles, North’s team of Clara Douglas and Addie Schneider won a pair of matches in straight sets over teams from Kaukauna and Kimberly to also advance to sectionals.
Fox Valley Lutheran’s sectional qualifiers at No. 1 singles player Linda Bowater, and the No. 1 doubles team of Johanna Mears and Avery Steffes.
Bowater won a quarterfinal match over Rosie Whitlinger of Appleton North, 6-4, 6-1, while Mears and Steffes cruised in their No. 1 doubles quarterfinal, defeating Lucy Kraft and Bryn Steenbock of West De Pere, 6-4, 6-2.
The top four finishers at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the top finisher at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles will automatically qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, which will be held Oct. 17-19. The top team in the sectional moves on to the 2024 WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Oct. 25-26.
All of Appleton East’s and Appleton West’s entrants were eliminated.
