Appleton North football drops overtime heartbreaker to Kaukauna

KAUKAUNA – Kyle Kress scored from the 2 in overtime to give Kaukauna a hard-fought 13-10 win over Appleton North in a Fox Valley Association football game Friday night at Kaukauna High School that was dominated by the defenses.

Kress scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter to put the Ghosts on top 7-0 and that lead held until the second half.

North (4-3, 3-2 FVA) wasn’t able to do much on offense all night, finishing with just 159 total yards, but put together one scoring drive in the third quarter that was capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Olson to Bobby Salm. Mason Skorstad’s extra point tied the game at 7-7.

Neither team was able to push it across in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.

North was held to a 35-yard field goal attempt by Skorstad that was good as it opened OT, handing the ball over to Kaukauna for its offensive chance, and the Ghosts (6-1, 5-0 FVA) cashed in as Kress plowed in from the 2 to give them the win.

Aidan Reardon ran for 204 yards for Kaukauna, which outgained North by a 2-to-1 margin 331-159.

Appleton North will host rival Appleton East next Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. and would clinch a WIAA playoff berth with a win. Kaukauna will head to Kimberly (5-1, 4-1 FVA) with a chance to wrap up at least a share of a second-straight FVA title.
