Appleton North earns seven state berths, Appleton East and Appleton West grab one each at WIAA Division 1 West De Pere Track Sectional

DE PERE – The Appleton North girls had four individuals and two relay teams grab state meet berths at the WIAA Division 1 Track & Field Sectional at West De Pere High School on Thursday.

The top three finishers in each event at the sectional automatically qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Track & Field Championships, which will be held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 31-June 1. Additional qualifiers – those who finish in the top eight statewide in all of the sectionals – will be announced on Friday.

The Appleton North girls 3,200 relay team of Sophia Schwerwinski, Sophie Busch, Lauren Podlasek and Ava Helmbrecht placed third in 9:36.06, and the 400 relay team of Maisey Bojarski, Ashley Parrish, Tarynne Pettinger and Emily Thompson was third in 49.28 seconds.

Also moving on to state for the Lightning girls were Parrish in the 200 (second, 26.16), Scherwinski in the 3,200 (third, 11:26), Bojarski in the long jump (third 17-4) and Nora Waddell in the pole vault (second, 11-9).

Appleton North, Appleton East and Appleton West each had one boys automatic qualifier.

West’s Tyce Scheetz, who also qualified for the WIAA State Cross Country Championships this past fall, will move on to state in the boys 800 meters after taking second in 1:57.53.

North’s 3,200 relay team of Peter Olson, Teddy Koelling, Caleb Hardy and Riley Szymik finished third in 8:03.43, and East’s Kyreese White was third in the 100 (11.21) to also qualify for next weekend’s state meet.
