Appleton East softball holds off late rally to defeat Hortonville

APPLETON – Appleton East scored five times in the fifth inning to pull ahead, then held off a late rally to defeat Hortonville 9-6 in a Fox Valley Association softball game Monday at East High School.
Appleton East (6-12, 6-9 FVA) added two more runs in the sixth inning to go up 9-2 before Hortonville put together a rally in the seventh, scoring four times before Patriots pitcher Elizabeth Jacobs finally finished off the victory. She tossed a complete game, finishing with five strikeouts and five walks.
Ava Smarzinski had two hits and two RBI, Maddie Heisler added a double and two RBI, and Aubrie Erickson had two hits and scored twice for the Patriots.
Paige Lillie had three hits for Hortonville (14-9, 9-6 FVA).
Kaukauna brings its 100-game winning streak to Appleton East for an FVA game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
