Appleton East girls basketball starts strong, rolls to upset win at Superior in WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal

SUPERIOR – Lilly Meulemans scored 18 of her team-high 23 points in the first half to help Appleton East build a big lead and the Patriots were able to finish off a 63-49 win over Superior in a WIAA Division 1 girls basketball regional semifinal Friday at Superior High School.
Meulemans made four of her five 3-pointers in the opening half as the 11th-seeded Patriots took a 37-22 lead over No. 6 Superior.
East (15-10) was able to maintain its big advantage the rest of the way and now moves on to Division 1 regional final at Fox Valley Association-rival and No. 3 seed Neenah (20-5) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Neenah pummeled Wisconsin Rapids 75-29 on Friday.
Neenah swept the FVA season series from the Patriots, winning by 23 and 37 points.
Ella Sweeney added three 3-pointers and 19 points, and Torie Neubauer had 14 points in the victory for Appleton East, which went a perfect 13-for-13 at the free throw line, 11-for-11 in the second half to clinch the win.
Eva Peterson scored a game-high 25 points for Superior (15-9).
