Appleton East girls basketball jumps out to early lead, holds off Appleton North

APPLETON – Appleton East opened up a double-digit lead in the first half and defeated Appleton North 70-59 in a Fox Valley Association girls basketball game Friday night at East High School.

The Patriots led 38-26 at halftime and were able to hold on the rest of the way, improving to 14-9 overall and 9-8 in the FVA.

Appleton East hit 10 3-pointers in the win, including three each by Torie Neubauer and Ella Sweeney. Sweeney had a team-high 17 points, Neubauer added 15 and Lilly Meulemans 14 for the Patriots.

Avery Werfal drilled five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 30 points for Appleton North, which finishes its regular season with a 12-12 record and a 10-8 mark in the FVA.

Appleton East will wrap up its regular season Tuesday at Kimberly before opening WIAA postseason play with a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal at Superior on Friday, Feb. 23.

Appleton North will host Oshkosh West in a Division 1 regional semifinal on Feb. 23.
