DE PERE – The Xavier softball team pulled out its first Bay Conference win, holding off a late rally to defeat West De Pere 5-4 on Thursday at Westwood Elementary School.
The Hawks led 5-2 after fielder’s choice RBI by Abby Ourada in the top of the seventh, only to see West De Pere (3-2, 0-1 Bay Conference) rally.
The Phantoms scored twice in the bottom of the frame thanks to an error and an RBI single by Braelynn Rukamp before Xavier pitcher Morgan Staszak coaxed a groundout to end the game.
Staszak earned the win, striking out two in 4 1/3 innings of relief.
Kalia Stammer had three hits and an RBI, and Ourada and Addison Hervey each drove in two runs for Xavier (3-1, 1-1 Bay).
Xavier will host Mayville for a nonconference game Saturday at 10 a.m.
