Winneconne pulls away to defeat Xavier football in WIAA Division 4 Level 2 playoff

WINNECONNE – Undefeated Winneconne held Xavier scoreless after the first quarter and pulled away for a 22-6 victory in a WIAA Division 4 Level 2 football playoff game Friday night at Winneconne High School.

The No. 1 seed Wolves (11-0) move on to a Level 3 game where they will host No. 2 seed Mayville (10-1) on Friday, Nov. 8. Xavier, the No. 4 seed in the bracket, finishes its year with a 6-5 record.

Winneconne quarterback Brody Schaffer stormed in from 29 yards out in the first quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead, one it would never relinquish.

Xavier answered on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Potter to Cole Hietpas, but the extra point was missed and the Hawks trailed 7-6.

Winneconne tacked on another score in the second quarter as Schaffer hit Ryan Quigley for a 2-yard touchdown pass and the Wolves took a 13-6 lead into halftime.

Winneconne added a safety in the third quarter by Oliver McAloon, and Schaffer put the finishing touches on the win with a 5-yard TD run in the fourth as the Wolves shut out Xavier after the first quarter.

Schaffer finished with 141 yards rushing and 110 passing as Winneconne pied up 334 yards of offense.
