Appleton West’s Fouts, Breed qualify for state at WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional at Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT – Appleton West seniors Lucie Fouts and Morgan Breed are heading to state after earning high finishes at a WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams at the sectional, for both boys and girls, qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Fouts finished sixth in the girls 5-kilometer race in 19:04.7 and Breed was 11th in 19:39.9 to earn two of the five individuals state meet berths.

Neenah won the girls team title with 24 points with Kimberly second with 71 points to earn the two team state bids. Appleton West was fifth, Appleton North sixth, Appleton East ninth and Xavier 10th in the girls team standings.

Mazie Olkowski of Neenah won the girls race in 18:44.4, two seconds in front of teammate Elsa Gruber.

Hannah Huza of Hortonville was third, and Stevens Point’s Tessa Bruckhart placed seventh and Jalyssa Groskreutz was 12th to earn the other three individual spots at state.

Ava Helmbrecht was 14th in 20:01.9 and Audry Dehlinger placed 23rd in 20:41.0 to lead Appleton North.

Rosemarie Butler finished 21st in 20:23.6 for Appleton East, and Xavier’s top runner was Raena Lambie, who placed 48th in 21:57.8.

Stevens Point had the top four finishers and won the boys team title with 19 points. Neenah will also be going to state on the boys side after placing second with 62 points. Appleton North was sixth, Appleton East 10th and Appleton West 11th among the 12 teams.

Ethan Olds of Stevens Point won the boys race in 15:59.2, with teammate Cooper Erickson second in 16:17.7.

Winneconne’s Oliver Aberle and Grant Wenzelow, Oshkosh West’s Celso Collins, and Kimberly’s Gavin Salzmann and Cayden Vosters earned the five individual state berths.

Lukas Hahn finished 19th in 17:13.5 and Braden Walters was 28th in 17:34.0 for the Appleton North boys.

Louie Mandich led Appleton East, taking 22nd in 17:19.3, and Appleton West’s top runner was Kegan Phalin, who was 27th in 17:32.0.
