Xavier boys basketball overcomes shooting woes to top West De Pere

APPLETON – The Xavier boys basketball team overcame a rare poor shooting night to defeat West De Pere 54-47 and take another big step toward a second-straight Bay Conference championship.

The Hawks shot just 32 percent from the field (16-for-50), were just 4 of 18 from 3-point range and made only 18 of 32 free throws, but were able to hold West De Pere to just 17 first-half points and pulled out their sixth-straight victory.

With the win, Xavier improves to 9-0 in the Bay Conference and opens up a 1½-game lead over the Phantoms in the standings.

Tyler Brightman had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Hayden Quimby kicked in 11 points for Xavier.

Bryce Borowicz led West De Pere (14-5 overall) with 13 points.

Xavier hosts Green Bay East in another Bay Conference game on Monday starting at 7 p.m. The game kicks off a week with four games, including a road game at Green Bay West on Tuesday, and home games against New London on Feb. 9 and Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Feb. 10.
